The word 'bonsai' is pronounced "bone-sigh". Although most people know the plants as little green miniature trees, the word actually translates to mean 'tree in a pot', which is easy for even the newest beginner to understand. However, what is most interesting is that the translation includes the concept that both the tree and its pot should compliment each other.

By tradition the tree is supposed to give the illusion of age. As a result, much of the growing and tending of the tree involves grooming it to make it look older than it actually is. That being said, in some older Asian families bonsai trees are passed down from generation to generation and are in fact very old.

As the term 'bonsai' refers to the setting of the tree and not the particular species, it is up to you as the gardener to choose an appropriate species to suit your own gardening plot or setting.
