Is growing a bonsai plant for everyone?

A bonsai plant is usually a miniature tree grown in a tray or pot. People most often see them in someone's home or on someone's desk and are amazed at this miniaturisation of a tree that has been smartly shaped and manicured.

If you are interested in growing and raising a bonsai plant you should start by reading as much on the topic as possible. There are very many books, magazines, and other publications available at the library, in bookstores and at garden centres. There are also of course many specific articles available at Web sites throughout the Internet available for reading and printing.

Once you have developed a little background knowledge concerning soil, fertilisers, plant care and feeding, amongst the many needs of your potential new bonsai plant, don't be too keen to rush in. You may be keen to buy one that has already been potted. However, remember that plants in pots that are bought at discount stores are just as they sound - discount. If you are serious about this hobby, you may decide to reward yourself by buying a nice little clay tray or pot that will provide a perfect container for your new bonsai plant. You can visit a nursery or specialist online store for a more expensive, hardier plant that may survive your learning curve. When buying a plant be sure to look for one with unbroken branches.

You will be surprised how much of your new found information you will be able to use in other gardening situations. Learning about different types of gardening situations and environments is a hobby that many people enjoy, however, raising a bonsai plant is very definitely a speciality area. This has manifested itself in social groups of gardeners who specialise in bonsai plants and who are keen to share their knowledge with other green thumbs, or with beginners who are full of questions and keen to consult the masters in the field.

Another fund way to learn about this type of gardening is to search for images on the Internet. Google has a great selection of over 4,000 bonsai plant images. Bonsai is in fact a form of fine art that was started by the Chinese and then adapted and expanded by the Japanese. Some of the original bonsai plants were actually miniature trees, i.e. natural mutants. The term bonsai as it is understood in the United States is a little less restrictive than the art practised in Japan, where not all plants are equal. There, to be accepted as a true bonsai plant, all aspects of the plant should be in proportion to a regular tree.
